Ah this was so close to brilliant.
I could call this note "How not to end a series."
The first few episodes were excellent. I was drawn in and the characters were clear, defined and played with a sense of fun by all the actors involved (even the more tragic characters seemed to imbue this spirit or not-taking-itself-too-seriously). There was humour, there was shock and there was mystery.
Then - the final episode. It just, kind of, fizzled. Clearly there is an expectation at Netflix that this will gain a renewal, so there was a desire to keep certain plot threads going. This was managed, though, at the cost of the audience feeling any resolution from the story so far.
I can't help but think about Breaking Bad. That had a massive, long running story, but each series (at least I remember) had a beginning, middle and end. There was enough to keep interest and enough to pull the following year, but it wasn't at the expense of the story of the series.
Maybe Netflix demands something from its scriptwriters that I don't know about. But the capitulation of the story in the last episode here will always leave a bit of a nasty taste in the mouth.
